Holdfast Mariculture is the future sugar kelp, bull kelp, and mussel farm of Whatcom County, Washington. Holdfast Mariculture focuses on regenerative aquaculture and habitat enhancement while feeding a growing population. Growing seaweed and shellfish is one of the most sustainable ways we can create more economic and food security in our communities. Holdfast Mariculture will be one of the first of its kind in Washington state, a three-dimensional, multi-species, mariculture that can provide nutritious food and ecosystem services.
Here a GoPro catches a penicillate jellyfish seeking refuge among eelgrass and sugar kelp. These jellies and many other organisms rely on the seagrass and seaweed habitat for shelter and food.
Seaweed and shellfish improve the natural environment and provide ecosystem services, where the natural processes directly and indirectly improve human health and our social welfare.

We set out to share the flavors and stories of our coast, and do it in a way that is good for our oceans, communities, and future.

We focus on regenerative farming practices to source quality delicious food and help support the natural environment. We include innovative solutions to further learn how to safely and environmentally responsibly grow bull kelp, sugar kelp, split kelp and many other native species.

Holdfast Mariculture attended the Pacific Marine Expo 2025 in Seattle, WA.
